Around 6 months ago, the micro-blogging platform Tumblr made the jump to a paid advertising system, allowing advertisers to pay for placements on Tumblr users’ dashboards. On one hand, this seems to be a great ideal social media networks are still somewhat uncharted territory for advertising, and Tumblr is an incredibly popular platform to take advantage of. The folks at Adweek seem to agree, even going as far as saying that “Tumblr could be a savior” for the advertising industry.
However, the jury is still out on whether or not it’s an effective tool; it’ll be incredibly difficult (or pointless) to advertise on Tumblr without being completely familiar with the platform. Ultimately, it will come down to understanding what type of content on Tumblr works best and what motivates activity, and Ad Age hits it right on the mark by pointing out that it’s Animated .GIFs.
